“Success is not built on success. It’s built on failure. It’s built on frustration. Sometimes it’s built on catastrophe.”
More often than not I think that success only feels like true success when you’ve worked for it, when you’ve been through hell for it and especially when it hasn’t come easily. This year’s results season – both at my university and for those taking a-levels- reminded me of this quote. I know certainly for me, success feels even better knowing that I really worked for it. For other people, who were not quite as successful as they’d hoped, that could be a foundation to build upon.
“Oh Time! The beautifier of the dead, adorer of the ruin, comforter and only healer when the heart hath bled.”
I think people underestimate how important time is. Whether you have enough time to do something, too little time and miss something, give enough time to get over something or use your time to have something, its frustratingly fascinating. We’re allocated time in the same way – by the second and the minute- but the time of each individual couldn’t be more different. I think that time has the ability to make something or destroy something.
“We choose those we like; with those we love, we have no say in the matter.”
Mignon McLaughlin, The Neurotic’s Notebook, 1960
There is little that we control in life, least of all this. Equally so, if you don’t like someone, then it is not a choice that can be helped either.
“You do not have to be good, you do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.”
Wild Geese, Mary Oliver
I think there is far too much pressure on people to act a certain way and to be a certain person, purely to meet other people’s expectations. I often wonder what is so wrong with having your own expectations for yourself, regardless of how they are percieved by others. People need to start asking ‘so what if I enjoy this?’ or ‘why do you care if I do that?’, because at the end of the day, if they do have a problem with you doing what you’re doing, then perhaps their opinions shouldn’t be so important to you anyway. (just a small rant, sorry!)
“Guys always think tears are a sign of weakness. They’re a sign of frustration. She’s only crying so she won’t cut your throat in your sleep. So make nice and be grateful.”
This made me laugh, mainly because it’s true. Many conflicting life situations usually result in a choice between tears or a fight.
“You could be a sweet dream, or a beautiful nightmare. Either way I don’t want to wake up from you.”
Beyonce, Sweet Dreams
This is a funny lyric for me because recently I have been wishing my housemates sweet dreams before bed, something they find rather amusing. This morning I didn’t want to wake up quite so soon from my dream to the chilly weather outside, but that’s the way it goes!
“I didn’t set out to beat the world; I just set out to do my absolute best.”
The motto at the London 2012 Olympics is “Inspire a Generation” and over the past week and a bit, I have found the Olympic games to be completely inspiring, and emotive and unifying. It really is amazing that when athletes come together to run, swim, dive, throw, gallop or hit, the rest of the world unify and revel and take pride in that too.
