“It takes a great deal of courage to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends.”

Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

I watched the first Harry Potter film with some housemates today – such a blast from the past!

“There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves, it is not my nature.”

Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey

As soon as I read this, it struck some sort of agreement with who I am. Those who are my closest friends are loved by me but in a whole way. Even if they do something stupid or annoying or even if its just something that I don’t agree with, I still love them completely. I don’t think I could ‘half love’ those who are truly most important to me.

“We should always have three friends in our lives-one who walks ahead who we look up to and follow; one who walks beside us, who is with us every step of our journey; and then, one who we reach back for and bring along after we’ve cleared the way.”

Michelle Obama

So thankfully, Barack won his second term in office today, and if I were American, I would have voted for him too, purely due to the genius and goddess that is his wife.

“I learned that the richness of life is found in adventure… It develops self- reliance and independence. Life then teems with excitement.”

William Orville Douglas

Off on a little European trek with some friends for a week 🙂 hopefully it’ll be an exciting experience of independence and adventure.

“There is no greater sorrow, than to recall a happy time, when miserable.”

Dante Alighieri

Had a strangely nostalgic few days, and although I am happy with where I am and what I’m doing at the moment, there is a lot that I miss. Not necessarily specific things or people, just the way things were, how protected and sheltered I was, how my relationships were with the people I know. Change is something that is definite, however, and hopefully the power of hindsight will make change more acceptable.

“Sometimes it makes me sad, though, Andy being gone. I have to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright and when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice, but still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone. I guess I just miss my friend.”

Morgan Freeman as Red, The Shawshank Redemption

Last night I watched the Shawshank Redemption on t.v. I had forgotten how much a of a brilliant film it is; how sad and revealing and intricate it is. This is one of my favourite few lines from the film- some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just to bright…

“Fate is like a strange, unpopular restaurant filled with odd little waiters who bring you things you never asked for and don’t always like.”

Lemony Snicket

Really had the strangest few days for a long time. Spoken to old faces, heard new things, been surprised, been cheered up, been let down, met some odd people, met some fantastic people, dealt with conflicts, emotions, relationships, friendships. It has been pretty mad, to say the least.
