“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”

Lao Tzu

I think I am going to need to keep reminding myself of this over the coming days and weeks. Today marks one of the biggest changes in my life so far – my move to France for the year- and I hope that I have enough courage in me to adapt to and welcome the change. Wish me luck!

“Won’t you help me sing another song of freedom? Cause all I ever have, redemption songs.”

Bob Marley, Redemption Song

I’ve always been familiar with this song, but one day on holiday, a lady came to the hotel to sing and she sang this song and to see it in that emotional context and history of slavery, torment and freedom made it so much more significant for me. Actually visiting a place like Tobago, which has such a strong, yet bitter, British history made me think of a part of history that I’d never really considered properly before, and it was something by which I felt very moved.

“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but our self can free our minds.”

“The secret of freedom lies in educating people, whereas the secret of tyranny is keeping them ignorant.”

 Maximilien Robespierre

It is French National Day today, Bastille Day, and this quote comes from a French author who participated in the revolution. How true it is too!

4th July 2012

Have lacked posts over the past few days – life got a little bit busy! I went back to uni to pack up all my stuff so that I could move house and unpack all my stuff and then I stayed there for a few days with my sister, just chilling, settling in and having fun. The biggest thing that struck me over the past few days is the sense of responsibility that growing up gives you. Just by moving, we had to sort out bills, deal with a landlord, pay out money and be responsible for things. It’s a little scary, but it feels good!

“Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility. For the person who is unwilling to grow up, the person who does not want to carry his own weight, this is a frightening prospect.”

Eleanor Roosevelt

“Sometimes it makes me sad, though, Andy being gone. I have to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright and when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice, but still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone. I guess I just miss my friend.”

Morgan Freeman as Red, The Shawshank Redemption

Last night I watched the Shawshank Redemption on t.v. I had forgotten how much a of a brilliant film it is; how sad and revealing and intricate it is. This is one of my favourite few lines from the film- some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just to bright…
